Cauliflower & Peas

This dish is a gujarati-household staple.  Growing up, I had this almost every week or at least every other week. It’s spicy and sweet at the same time, hitting all those taste buds.  Gujarati cuisine uses sugar in almost every dish to enhance the flavors. This can be made with a variation of potatoes added in as well. Served with roti or on a bed of rice&daal, it’s a home-run for those taste buds 😀


1 sm. red onion chopped

1 chopped tomato

1 whole cauliflower chopped (or prepackaged cut if short on time)

1/3 cup frozen peas

1tspn zeera

1 tspn EACH ginger paste and garlic paste (or 1 tblspn combined)

¾ tspn haldi

red chilli pwdr to taste

½ tspn garam masala

Cilantro to garnish

Sprinkle of sugar


In oil add 1tspn zeera and when crackles add one small chopped red onion. Fry for 1-2 mins. Add ginger garlic paste 1full Tspn each. Fry until translucent and garlic smell disappears. Add 3/4th tspn turmeric, 1-2tspn (to taste) red chili powder, and ½ tspn garam masala. Mix for one min. Add 1 chopped tomato and salt and Sauté until oil separates. Add peas and 1 whole cauliflower chopped. Mix in masala and sugar and add sprinkle of water. Cook covered on med heat for 5 mins, and then low heat 5minutes until soft yet crunchy. Garnish with lots of cilantro.  Voila!
