This zesty homemade pizza sauce recipe is a balanced blend of herbs and spices to pack your pizza with flavor. In my opinion, it’s the best homemade pizza sauce, period.
I’ve tried so many different sauce recipes over the years, and I now use this one exclusively. I don’t remember where I got it, but I’ve been using it for years. It’s the perfect blend of herby, spicy, savory, sweet, and salty flavors. It’s easy, it’s quick, and it’ll take you all of five minutes. All you do is combine all the sauce ingredients in a small bowl with a whisk, and no cooking is required.
Pizza sauce is arguably the most important component of making a great pizza. You can have a great cheese blend or a great pizza dough recipe, but if your sauce is lacking you end up with a pizza that’s a little wanting.

What Is Pizza Sauce Made Of?
Pizza sauce is made of tomatoes, spices, and seasonings. It is a thicker sauce than marinara sauce, and it is used to top pizzas. Pizza sauce can be made with a variety of spices, including basil, oregano, and garlic. It is typically seasoned to taste and can be made with either canned or fresh tomatoes. Store-bought pizza sauce works in a pinch, but once you try this homemade pizza sauce recipe you’ll probably never go back. It’s extremely easy to make, requires no cooking, and is much cheaper if you already have the spices and herbs on hand.
How Much Does This Recipe Make?
This recipe makes enough pizza sauce for one 18″ pizza or two 14″ pizzas, plus a little extra if you appreciate extra sauce. It’s delicious on a New York Style Pizza, a deep-dish style pizza, or heated and used for dipping Garlic Knots.
How Can This Be Made Vegan?
To make this vegan, simply omit or replace the parmesan cheese with nutritional yeast or another replacement for your vegan pizza.
Pizza Saucing Guidelines:
- Light Sauce: If there’s a thin layer of sauce and a lot of the dough is readily showing through the sauce, that’s light sauce.
- Regular Sauce: A standard pizza should be sauced enough that you can just barely see the dough through the sauce.
- Extra Sauce: If you can’t really see the dough through the sauce, that’s extra sauce.

- A set of measuring spoons and cups like these to measure out ingredients. The printed measurements on these won’t wear off over time either like most plastic sets because the numbers are actually etched in instead of printed on.
- A whisk to mix the sauce ingredients in a bowl.
- A can opener for the tomato paste.
- A spoon to scoop it out of the can.

Zesty Pizza Sauce Recipe
Makes sauce enough for one 18″ pizza, or two 14″ pizzas.
- 1 6 oz can tomato paste
- 1 cup water
- 3 tablespoons grated parmesan
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 3/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
- 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/4 teaspoon salt or more to taste
Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl.
Use a whisk to stir the ingredients until the sugar and salt have dissolved into the sauce, then add your homemade pizza sauce to your pizza with a spoon or ladle to your preference.
Note: If stored in the fridge overnight, the consistency of the sauce can solidify due to the tomato paste. If this happens, just add a little extra water and whisk it again.
